Here you will find valuable tips for landscape maintenance month by month!

January
Check and make sure that mulch is still covering any plants that are exposed to the north.
Thorough pruning should be done on all trees and shrubs.
Deep-water trees, shrubs and roses, as needed.
Water Pansies.

February 
Feed all trees and shrubs.
Use dormant oils to control scale or bores.
Water Pansies, trees, shrubs, ect.
Pull Pansies and plant annual beds and containers.

March
On the first apply Pre-emergent on lawn.
On the 15th feed lawn with 15-5-10 (or two weeks after you apply Pre-emergent) fertilizer ratio (3-1-2).
Feed all trees and shrubs in case you forgot to last month.
Apply pre-emergent herbicide to problem areas.
Rake up debris from around plants.
Check for leaks in all irrigation systems and in all zones.
Cut back non-evergreen perennials. Remove dead plant material all the way to the ground with a pair of hand prunes.
Check deciduous trees for buds that have died. Do not shear deciduous trees- they should be pruned.
Install spring color and freshen mulch around shrubs.
Deep-water trees and shrubs, as needed.

April
Work on removing grass from the edges of beds.
Aerate and fertilize your lawn.
Prepare soil for gardens.
Fertilize all perennials and shrubs with slow release fertilizer.
Halfway through the month, bring out the annual and perennials pots that have spent the winter indoors.

May
Mulch around flower and shrub beds to conserve moisture and keep weeds down.
Mow lawn to no less than 2".
WEED!
Water plants, trees, shrubs and lawn approximately 1" per week.
Fertilize bulbs.

June
On the first apply Pre-emergent on lawn.
On the 15th feed lawn with 15-5-10 (or two weeks after you apply Pre-emergent) fertilizer ratio (3-1-2).
Also on the 15th apply Diazanon for grubbworm problems if they exist (also treats fleas and ticks in your yard.)
WEED!
Continue the cleaning of beds.

July
Water annuals in pots and beds DAILY.
WEED!!
Mow lawn to no less than 2 1/2" in height, and never cut more than one-third of the growth.
After the middle of the month, through February of next season, do not use high nitrogen fertilizers on trees.
Make sure that your garden is well mulched to protect it during the hot days.
Watch for harmful insects, and treat as needed.

August
Make sure trees and shrubs get enough water during this month.
Pay special attention to your watering this month. Areas in the full sun, to the west, or against hot walls may need extra watering.
WEED!! WEED!! WEED!!

September
On the first apply Pre-emergent on lawn.
On the 15th feed lawn with 15-5-10 (or two weeks after you apply Pre-emergent) fertilizer ratio (3-1-2).
Plant new Perennials.
Water as needed, but be sure to cover your plants if necessary. Be sure to check the ground to avoid over watering.

October
Install fall color.
Plant Pansies.
Cut back perennials to 3-4" base.
Plant hardy bulbs for spring blooming.
Watch for early frost, and be sure to cover your plants if necessary.

November
Feed all trees and shrubs in case you didn't get around to it in the spring.
Plant or transplant Evergreens.
Mulch young or newly planted trees and shrubs.
Purchase spring bulbs to force or bloom indoors during the winter.

December
Winterize your irrigation system.
Water shrubs, Pansies, trees, new perennials, ect. on warm days.
